Drawing of a Film Camera

Derived from the French term "mise-en-scène", this is a film club centred around the celebration of film, not just as a form of escapism, or a communal experience...but as a form of art.

Even saying that to some may feel excessive or sound like a pretentious perspective on such an ordinary medium. But for those of us that understand the logistics around filmmaking, the creative decisions that bring such grand stories to the silver screen and the history behind this ever-evolving industry; film feels like storytelling in its finest form.

And it's for those of us that share this sentiment that this film club is for.
The
cinephiles and enthusiasts.
The
critics and the analysts.
The historians and the admirers.
Fans of cinema in every shape of the word.

mise-en-scène

/ˌmiːz ɒ̃ ˈsɛn/

the stage design and arrangement of actors in scenes for a theatre or film production.

When applied to the cinema, mise-en-scène refers to everything that appears before the camera—the setsprops, costumes, actors, and even the lighting.

Hi, everyone! My name is Ruth and I'm the founder of this Birmingham-based film club.

I've been passionate about cinema every since I was young and watched Pacific Rim in 2013. I know that's not a 'classic' pick as a cinephile, but I don't care, I love it and Guillermo del Toro is an amazing director!

However, I did start to broaden my knowledge on film in 2020 when I first watched 'Gone With the Wind' and I've been in love with Old Hollywood movies ever since.

Soon after, I began to watch foreign cinema from, South Korea, China, India, and I became enamoured with the beauty and differences each industry brought to filmmaking.

But I would like to meet more people in Birmingham who love film just as much as I do, not only just to make friends and connections, but to learn from others and gain a deeper understanding of cinema!

  • Favourite Films: Pacific Rim, Mad Max: Fury Road, Inception, Hero, Dune: Part Two, The Lion in Winter, The Red Shoes, The Killer
